I get to see and meet lots of different businesses. That is a privileged position and one of the perspectives that has afforded me is being able to see how many firms have a fundamentally adversarial culture; perhaps boss vs workers, or sales vs production, or person A vs person B, or heaven forbid, all of the above.

All too often those firms talk a good game, presenting a veneer of all being on the same team and all pulling in the same direction, but underneath that thin veneer there lies a dysfunctional core of unhealthy conflict.

Let’s be clear. Conflict isnt the problem. All great businesses will have conflict. That is a natural consequence of having passionate and committed people. It is the healthy or unhealthy description that is the real problem.

Conflict becomes unhealthy when it becomes a personal issue rather than an issue of principle; when getting one over on the other person is the driver rather than what is right for the business and the customer. Then it becomes a matter of me or you.

It is a lot harder for an adversarial culture to exist if, as a team, everyone is totally clear about what we are trying to achieve ( we call this  the BHAG) and why our (collective) work is important (Core Purpose)  and what our standards of behaviour should be (Core Values).

In an adversarial culture nobody ever really wins, not the customer, not the business and not the individual team members.
