Who are you being right now?

  • Am I being the person I want to be right now?

Thanks to Marshall Goldsmith for the above question, which is surely one of the most powerful questions any one of us can repeatedly ask ourselves.

To be able to answer the question we need to be able to access an ideal self image and by applying thought to who we are when we are at our best will actually give you an advantage over those people who have not yet applied the same level of thought.

To repeatedly ask yourself the question and answer it honestly can only increase your own awareness of your behaviour in the moment and, as research has repeatedly shown,  awareness is curative. Over time this mindful approach to your own behaviour, your own thinking and your own actions can only serve to help you move closer to your own ideal more often and more consistently.

It sounds simple, and it is, but it is also easy not to do. So lets make a start

To do:

  1. Take some quiet time to reflect on what good looks like , for you. What behaviours define you when you are at your best?
  2. Start making notes on this so that you can refer back to them and refine and polish up your image of you at your best.
  3. Set up a ritual to stop and compare your actual behaviour to your definition of your ideal behaviour. It may be two or three times a day or after a specific set of circumstances, but do not leave it to chance.
  4. Note down the things that you did that exceeded your ideal and note down the things that undershot your ideal
  5. Rinse and repeat
