What’s Your Tell?

To put it another way.

  • What are your personal signs that you are getting close to an allostatic overload?

There were some interesting responses to last week’s piece about allostatic load including a friend who wrote to me to tell me that he had learned there were certain signs that he had come to learn were telling him he needed to take his foot off the gas. In his words: dry throat, very little sleep and still an urge to “press in and continue”.

He now knows this means to back off a little and repair. What a great observation and a fantastic piece of advice.

Most, perhaps all, of us will have a ‘tell’. Mine is a twitch in my left eye. What is yours?

What a gift it is to develop enough self awareness to notice the ‘tell’ in the first place. What it is to have the wisdom to understand what our ‘tell’ means and when combined with the humility to act on the message we can consider ourselves truly blessed. Too many have not yet developed to that level of wisdom or are living too much in the noise to notice what our body is trying to tell us.

To do:

  1. Schedule some quiet time to think deeply and honestly about the stressors in your life right now and whether there are any ‘tells’ for you.
  2. Get some perspective. Speak to a coach, a friend, a trusted advisor. What can they notice that you can’t
  3. Look up allostatic load, understand it. Awareness is curative.
  4. Ringfence enough quiet time to listen to yourself.
  5. Identify activities so that you can re-create regularly.

Many successful business owners eventually hit a wall on growth and struggle to climb it alone. When you work with me you get a fresh perspective, a solid plan, and customised coaching so you can grow and scale your business safely and at speed.
