They Now Have A Name For It
Quiet Quitting’ is the new phrase our deep thinking colleagues across the pond have created to describe team members who are refusing to do anything that isn’t in their job descriptions. It is being passed off as a less obvious alternative to ‘The Great Resignation’
However, it is an old concept that any business owner will recognise; that of a team member who is not really engaged with the business, who clocks on and some hours later clocks off and collects their pay cheque every week or month.
For many years the Gallup organisation have measured Employee Engagement across the globe and have struggled to find examples any greater than 15%. That means that of every 100 workers as many as 85 will not be engaged and of course of the 85 who knows how many will be actively disengaged? In other words deliberately pulling against the business.
I believe this is almost always a failure of leadership. People generally want to be part of something larger than themselves, they want to be involved in worthwhile work that makes a difference in some way. If leadership fail to paint this picture then the contract is doomed to be purely transactional. Pay me and I will turn up. Lead me and inspire me and there’s a good chance I will bring my brain, my heart and spirit to work with me. Listen to me and I will repay you with loyalty and effort. Treat me as a resource and I will show you the error of your ways in quiet, hidden ways.
Some call it quiet quitting. Homer Simpson was far more prosaic when he observed “If adults don’t like their jobs they don’t go on strike. They just go in every day and do it really half-arsed”
