The Enemy Of Great 2
Good is the enemy of great according to Jim Collins, and my 20 years experience as a business coach.
I was struck only a few days ago by how often leaders work so hard to get their businesses to a level we might call good and then settle there. Of course that leaves them prey to anyone who can surpass that level and get to great.
It is ironic how often leaders, having scaled the greater part of the mountain, seem to get stuck some way short of the summit.
They may have done the emotionally hard work of removing their C players and developing a team of A players but then not had the fortitude or indeed appetite to replace their A players with A* players. Or stayed too loyal too long to A players past their zenith.
Or they may have been seduced by the improvement in individuals and become less demanding that they become true superstar A players.
We will never become great if we settle for good. Look what Alex Ferguson did when he sacked David Beckham, he replaced him with Christiano Ronaldo. A brave and bold move, if ever there was one that kept the Manchester United of that era right at the top of world football.
So the questions for this week are;
- In what areas have you settled for good, at the expense of great?
- Which of your improving players have slowed their rate of improvement?
- Which of your superstars are in danger of passing their zenith, or already have done?
- To what degree is your ambition or ability running out of steam short of the summit?
