The A Player – Part 5

Last week I wrote about Core Values and their importance in helping us to determine who are the A players on our team.

Nancy Kline described values as ‘the unconscious filters that drive our behaviour’. So although we refer to (core) values the only thing that we can actually observe are behaviours.

So we start with Core Values but what we observe are behaviours, so it makes sense to begin to define the behaviours that we want to see. Going from Core Values to behaviours is a great exercise to do with the team.

Getting them to workshop together what we actually mean by ‘innovative’ or ‘trustworthy’ or whatever our value may be, not only provides clarity but also helps keep the values alive in the business, which you will remember is one of the three tests.

Once the behaviours which will indicate that the Core Values are being adhered to, and the behaviours that will indicate they are not being adhered to, are defined then you will have a basis for appropriate discussion in weekly meetings and appraisals alike.

So the questions for today are:

  • What do your Core Values really mean?
  • What behaviours will indicate that they are being adhered to?
  • What behaviours will indicate that there is some work to be done?

Many successful business owners eventually hit a wall on growth and struggle to climb it alone. When you work with me you get a fresh perspective, a solid plan, and customised coaching so you can grow and scale your business safely and at speed.
