The A Player Part 4
Last week I wrote about Core Values and their importance in helping us to determine who are the A players on our team.
Nancy Kline described values as ‘the unconscious filters that drive our behaviour’. So although we refer to (core) values the only thing that we can actually observe are behaviours.
In the Scaling Up community we have three tests that Core Values have to pass in order to be considered as Core Values, rather than just an exercise in B.S.
They are:
- Are Core Values alive in the business?
- Would we take a financial hit based upon our Core Values?
- Would we fire an offender?
All three conditions must be met otherwise, as is often the case, the Core Values are simply a PR exercise. There is nothing more damaging than an organisation that claims one thing while its behaviours, or the behaviours of its people do not support, or even goes against that claim. What happens then is every action simply serves to prove the organisation is lying and all trust will have disappeared.
Having B.S. Core Values will be more damaging than having none at all.
So the question for today is:
- If you have Core Values, do they pass the three stage test above?
- How will you know?
- If you don’t have Core Values, why not?
