The A Player
In over 2 decades of coaching business leaders probably the most impactful definition has been the definition of an A player.
We all think we know an A player, someone you would have on your team, anytime, every time, but when I ask people to be specific about what makes an A player most of us find it a difficult thing to do.
So here is my definition: an A player is someone who consistently performs well and who consistently displays behaviour that matches our Core Values.
It follows that to know whether someone is an A player or not, we simply need to measure two things, performance and behaviour in relation to our Core Values.
Do you?
My experience is that most businesses do not. Lets look at performance first.
So the question for today is
- How clear and well understood are our measurements of individual role performance?
- Does everyone know what is expected of them and the standard to which they are expected to perform?
- Can everyone see how they are doing on a daily basis?
