Team Science

I have repeatedly said that ‘clarity is power’ and in a growing business one of the things that we need to be clear about is ‘are we playing a team game?’. This is a deep and complex question but if we are, then we need to understand that there is a lot of science at play in creating a winning team.

If you follow any team sports you will be able to recognise those teams who know, understand and apply that scientific approach to creating and maintaining a winning team and those that don’t.

Think of some winning teams we have recently witnessed; The British and Irish Lions, the Lionesses and now England’s Women’s Rugby Team. Their successes weren’t by accident, they didn’t come about simply because they had a better game plan or physical superiority, although both may have been important. All of these put ‘teamship’ front and centre. They happened because the leaders understood the multiplier effect that teamship can give. They developed the team as much, if not more, than the individual.

So the questions for today are:

• What is your philosophy?
• Does teamship have a place in your organisation?
• Can teamship be the difference that makes the difference?
• On a scale of 0 to 10 how good are you at creating a winning team?
• Do you give teamship the focus and centrality that the Lionesses do?
