There seems little doubt that the biggest problem that businesses face is around people. And the root cause of people problems stems from our ability or inability to recruit the right people. In fact, among the people problems ‘lack of suitable talent’ is one of the major gripes I hear.

But successful businesses typically credit their success to their people. The two views seem to be at variance. A very quick search on Amazon will show over 1000 books on recruiting but I would argue that how you recruit isn’t the solution. If you want the very best candidates to choose from, the first thing you need to do is make sure that your firm is the one firm in your industry, region or field that people want to work for.

If you aren’t the ‘employer of choice’ the best you can hope for is second choice, which in reality probably means last choice. So instead of you getting the pick of the crop you are left to select from the ones that don’t want a job or everyone else has rejected, or both.

So, your number one job is to transform your business into one that everyone wants to work for. To do that you need to understand what the right people require from their employer. Spoiler alert; it isn’t simply the highest wages. If you have the reputation of being the best place (for whatever reasons) to work, people will seek you out. It is more difficult to get a job in Google for instance than a place in Harvard.

In these days of rampant social media, and you are a crappy place to work, it is impossible to keep that fact a secret. Good recruiting starts with happy and engaged employees and it is never too late to start or enhance that process, so start now.

So the questions for today are:

  • How many of your current team would unreservedly recommend your firm to their friends or relatives as a place to work?
  • Do you know the above number? It is called Employee Net Promoter Score (eNPS)
  • If not, why not?
  • Start here first.
