Self-Fulfilling Prophecy

After 21 years of coaching I get to see recurring patterns. By far the most prevalent is the truth in ‘The right people, in the right job doing the right things right’. Almost every day I repeat this phrase and almost every day somebody will comment that their business began to turn around when they started to exit the C players.

It is a self-fulfilling prophecy that if we hire the wrong people, sooner or later, as the boss, we will end up doing some or all of their work. Maybe it even gets duplicated because we don’t trust them. What a waste of energy!

But if we are doing their work, who is doing our work? And frankly our work is the most important. Every hour, every minute we spend doing the stuff that actually lies in somebody else’s wheel house is an hour that we are not doing the stuff that we and only we can do.

Inevitably the rest of the team will get less attention and their performance will deteriorate, which will mean that the decline accelerates, and the downward spiral will gather pace.

It is great that as the boss we are willing and able to go below decks and stoke the boiler, but while we are doing that, who is on the bridge watching for the iceberg?

So the questions for today are:

• Who is the C player on your team? The person who is not really doing what the business needs them to do? We all have at least one.
• Why are you allowing them to take the space of someone who could contribute more?
• Is it fair that you are allowing them to drain the energy of both yourself and the rest of the team?
• When will you exit them from the business?
