Scaling Upgrade

The school I went to was Victorian in its attitudes and practices and as a punishment they would often set essays to be written in what little free time we got, on special ‘punishment paper’. It probably won’t surprise you to know I got a lot of these.

One day I had to write 10 pages on that passage from Corinthians “When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things.”

It strikes me that lots of things that we do, that might work for us in one part of our lives, won’t work in another part of our lives or our career. This is the central theme in Marshall Goldsmith’s book ‘What got you here, won’t get you there’.

Similarly, the way we run our business or manage our people, the way we think and the way we act all need to change so that the business can grow. If we are not upgrading at a faster pace than our customers, the market or our business we are becoming (even more of) a bottleneck.

If you or your business are not achieving what they should this is probably the problem.

So the question for you this week is.

• What is it about the way I am working / managing / thinking / leading that is no longer working for me or my business?

To do:

1. Try to honestly answer the question above, by yourself.
2. Ask for feedback from the people you work with.
3. Find a trusted and experienced friend or better yet a coach to give a better perspective.
4. Commit to appropriate countermeasures.
