Scaling Up Win or Lose
When small businesses start to scale, it is often their very strengths that stop them from scaling up.
Often businesses are built upon a specific (technical) skill set of the founder. She is unbelievably good at doing whatever it is that the business does and that works very well in growing the business, until it doesn’t. Because at that point, or rather prior to that point, it becomes necessary for the founder to either pass on their skills so they can lead a growing business or establish a leadership team to do that for them.
This is a pivot point that will really challenge the flexibility of most people. New skills of leading and delegating will have to be learned and the old skills, the ones that got us here, will have to be sublimated to those new ones.
If, for example, the founder continues to answer everyone’s questions and instruct them on how to solve every problem she will not have the capacity to handle the increased scale and, what’s worse, she will not have developed the ability for her colleagues to think through their own solutions. So, scaling becomes an increasingly heavy millstone.
If, however, she is able to get the right people on the bus, in the right seats and to consciously and deliberately develop those people to think and operate at a higher level, both individually and collectively in a healthy culture of accountability scaling will then serve to lighten the load.
It is a choice and the choice is around personal development and flexibility.
So the question for you this week is.
- What is it that got me here, that is stopping us from getting there? And what can I do about that?
To do:
- Try to honestly answer the question above, by yourself.
- Ask for feedback from the people you work with.
- Find a trusted and experienced friend or better yet a coach to give a better perspective.
- Commit to appropriate countermeasures.
Many successful business owners eventually hit a wall on growth and struggle to climb it alone. When you work with me you get a fresh perspective, a solid plan, and customised coaching so you can grow and scale your business safely and at speed.
