Routine Sets You Free

Routine sets you free is very much a mantra of the Scaling Up community. I have written about it before. As the world enters another era of extreme flux the phrase is even more resonant.

At a recent presentation I expressed my dislike of the phrase ‘unprecedented’ which seems to have replaced ‘new normal’ as the journo’s word of the day: unprecedented price rises, unprecedented wage rises, unprecedented inflation, interest rates and the list goes on. The truth is that most of these things aren’t unprecedented. We have experienced all of these things before, however not for a long time. But they aren’t really new, particularly to those of us old enough to have headed up businesses in the stormy days of the 80’s and 90’s.

One of the things we learned back then was to have a regular routine of checking things. If wages are rising and material costs are rising inevitably gross profit margin will be under pressure. What is your routine for checking that your gross profit margin is remaining within acceptable parameters? My particular businesses established a routine of monthly, detailed accounts reviews in order to stay ahead of the myriad daily changes that were taking place. These forensic examinations involved the whole team, because the whole team could impact the outcome.

This was definitely a routine that set us free and one which if it isn’t in place in your business needs locking in the diary now.
