Repetition

I have been writing weekly blogs for about 15 years now. Although every one is different a lot of them cover similar ground.

If my audience were the members of my team, my business, I would take a different approach. I would resist the temptation to present a slightly different angle and be deliberately repetitive. Why? Because people need to hear the same thing a number of times before they truly hear it, and then they need to truly hear it a number of times before it becomes part of who they are.

No matter how inspiring the message a team member would need to hear your mantra many times before they are likely to internalise it to the degree that it will influence their behaviour.

If you think about all of the people on your team and the number of conversations you have and the likelihood of someone being absent from any of those conversations, if you are not repeating yourself ad nauseam, the message density simply won’t be great enough to be effective.

You will be so bored of the message, I guarantee it, or you aren’t doing it right, but don’t change the message because you’re bored. Someone who is listening won’t yet have heard it enough. Stick with it or lose the impact.

As Norman Vincent Peale said “Repetition of the same thought or physical action develops into a habit which, repeated frequently enough, becomes an automatic reflex.”

So the questions for this week are;

• How clear is your prime mantra?
• Are you sick of saying it?
• Can everyone in your company recite the same mantra without prompting?
• Is it changing behaviour?
• On a scale of 0 to 10 how powerful is your mantra?
• What can you do to move it 2 points?
