I’ve written extensively recently about C players and the need to get the right people on the bus, and of course the wrong people off the bus. In his remarkably good recent book ‘The Diary of a CEO’ Steven Bartlett talks about an interesting concept in law 30.

When in doubt about someone, he suggests you ask yourself the simple question, ‘if everyone in the business shared the same behaviours or attitude as the person under consideration would that raise the overall standards of performance or lower them?’

If the answer is that it would lower them, then why are you employing that person in the first place?

It is a straightforward question. It takes a brave person to ask it and an even braver one to act on it.

So the questions for today are:

  • Who among your team are lowering the teams average standards?
  • What is your action plan for changing that behaviour or getting them off the bus?
  • What help or support is going to help you do what you now know you must?
