Professional
Often I talk with clients and describe the effect of the work we are doing as helping to ‘professionalise’ their business and I frequently wonder about the appropriateness of that word.
In my mind the opposite of professional is amateur. Professional being something that we do to earn a living and amateur being something that we do for the love of it. So, it stands to reason that the way we run a business should be professional. But often it seems that we can be very unprofessional.
I am fascinated by the difference between amateur sportspeople and professionals. There are deep and significant differences between their approach to the sport and their commitment to the sport, which in turn leads to a difference in their level of performance.
I wonder where on the scale from outright amateur to full on professional you would rate your approach to business?
So the questions for today are:
- Would you rate yourself as a high performer?
- Is your business high performing?
- How would you know?
- If you were transported into a conspicuously high performing company (think Apple or Tesla) how do you think you would fare?
