People Strategy

What is your people strategy? Do you have one?

Is it thought through and written down, constantly under review and evolving?

If a business is really a machine designed to achieve something where all of the primary moving parts are people, why would you not start with a people strategy?

Years ago I learned that we tend to recruit based on mind and body, meaning that if someone had the intellect and the physical ability to do the job they were a contender but that it was much more important to recruit for heart and spirit, in other words the desire and motivation to do a great job. If you think of any exceptional performer, in any field, I guarantee you will find heart and spirit in abundance.

Yet how much time do we spend helping our people to really develop the desire, the volition and the motivation to be elite performers in service of our customers? And if we don’t is it any surprise that we get mediocre performance?

At its heart I believe any strategy is really a people strategy.

So the questions for today are:

• How clear are you on how people work and how they are motivated?
• How much time have you put into designing your people strategy?
• Who do you consult with to execute a winning people strategy?
• On a scale of 0 to 10 how well is it working?
• What are you going to do about it?
