Pattern Break
We all know how hard it is to break a habit yet often we get stuck in repeated patterns of behaviour that are not useful. Habits work for us because they are easy sequences of actions that are repeated frequently and therefore require less cognitive input to perform. So we might follow a good meal with a cigarette or a brandy.
It is more a habit than a requirement.
One way to kick a habit is to recognise the pattern and break it, perhaps by substituting a different action for the less desirable one, perhaps chewing gum or sucking a peppermint instead of smoking or drinking.
It is easier to break patterns when the context changes, so starting a diet or a fitness regime when we go on holiday might be easier than in the routine of our everyday existence, although losing weight on holiday may not sound feasible and somehow it seems easier to present the ‘new you’ when you come back. You will have established the behaviours and be less likely to fall back into the old ways.
At this time of the year there are holiday breaks which provide a perfect opportunity for us to make some much needed changes.
Which members of your team would benefit from some more appropriate behaviours and how can you take advantage of the natural break to make that transition easier?
So the questions for today are:
- Which habit of yours is serving you and your team badly.
- When does it happen most? What is the pattern?
- What can you do to break that pattern?
- Of your team members who displays the most damaging behaviour?
- How can you use the break to help them break their patterns?
