Passion
They say that nothing great was ever created without passion and the passion of the founder is more than necessary for a business to grow it can be the superpower that powers it to excellence.
Founder led businesses can often be beset with problems if the founder cannot scale her skills ahead of the needs of the business but in the book ‘The Founders Mentality’ Bain & Co. partners Chris Zook and James Allen recognise that there are three attitudes of some founders which are fundamental to a great business. Namely an insurgent’s clear mission and purpose, an unambiguous owner’s mindset and a relentless obsession with the front line.
It is worth reflecting on those three attributes. I have noted very often in the work that I do that those businesses whose founder was motivated by the need to break the ‘way we’ve always done things’ are very often the ones who create really strong businesses. And as businesses grow it is far too easy to get embroiled with the minutiae of administering a business and lose sight of the original objectives while at the same time losing sight of the people at the front line of the business where the profit and reputation are earned.
So the questions for today are:
- How strong is your purpose?
- On a scale of 0 to 10 how passionate are you about making a difference?
- Is your motivation strong enough to be contagious enough to motivate all of your team?
- Does it?
“Here’s what attitude motivation is: It’s helping people run, not because they are donkeys chasing a carrot or donkeys trying to avoid the stick—but because they want to become thoroughbreds”
