Ownership
I have been reflecting a lot recently on the power of ownership, and by that I mean the power of being vested in something. I am not talking about assets or possessions.
Maybe it is because I am helping some (too many) clients deal with the very difficult situations that arise when the people who are trying to execute or implement something have no ownership of what they are trying to do. That will always result in a less than optimal outcome.
People support that which they help create and are often indifferent to that which they had no say in. The most powerful motivation is intrinsic, in other words comes from inside the individual. Extrinsic motivation is when we do something for external rewards, like getting paid, or not getting fired. Intrinsic motivation will always trump extrinsic motivation.
To maximise intrinsic motivation, involve people as much as you can in the decision before it is made. Consult, let people have their say, their input. That does not mean that you need to make decisions by committee, that rarely works and is the responsibility of the leader after all, so don’t shirk it. But in the making of any decision, as leader, you can help people feel important, listened to, valued and heard and in so doing you will generate much more alignment, support and ownership, where it matters most.
Many successful business owners eventually hit a wall on growth and struggle to climb it alone. When you work with me you get a fresh perspective, a solid plan, and customised coaching so you can grow and scale your business safely and at speed.
