Leadership

One Trick Pony?

  • How flexible can you be?

We all have people that we relate with well, and others that we relate with less well. In normal life that probably doesn’t matter too much, but when you are a leader of people in a business, it matters. It matters a lot.

I am not talking about liking or being liked here. I am talking about being effective. A good leader cannot afford to have team members with who his, or her, leadership is less effective. We need to be high performance leaders regardless of the different personalities we have on our team, and remember a good team will necessarily be a mixture of differing personalities.

Research and experience has shown that flexibility is the key to being able to be an effective leader of a variety of characters.

Now flexibility is a quality that can be learned, developed and coached, so why wouldn’t we want to do that? Fortunately, we don’t have to work this out by ourselves. David Noble and Carol Kauffman have written an excellent book ‘Real-Time Leadership’ packed with examples and exercises to help you understand this complex concept and help you develop the personal flexibility to pick the best stance for the moment rather than your default stance as so often we do.

To do:

  1. Get a copy of ‘Real-Time Leadership’
  2. Read it
  3. Do the exercises
  4. Practice the skills
