On Leadership

Leadership is people pursuit. It is probably the ultimate application of all the human skills we have ever learned. It is difficult to lead someone to somewhere that you haven’t been or are frightened to go. That is why it is vital that as we become leaders we have at least one expert guide and the courage to grow.

If you were picking a guide to help you ascend Everest, for example, you would want to choose someone who had been there before wouldn’t you? You wouldn’t choose someone who had once read a book on it or seen the film, would you? Even better if our guide also had some well founded research to amplify his practical expertise. A student of mountain climbing as well as a seasoned and experienced climber.

It is strange then that so often when we find ourselves on that leadership journey we do so without a guide and even stranger that we often turn to the people we know for advice when they have never been on that journey themselves.

Opinions are always plentiful. Expertise is scarce.

So the questions for this week are;

• On your ascent of your own personal Everest how have you selected your guide(s)?
• What rigorous criteria did you use?
• Is it making the ascent less dangerous?
