No Quick Fixes

I believe Elon Musk has just warned his people about difficult times ahead and all the indicators that I am seeing are pointing to some very strange times indeed.

I have been leading businesses for over forty years and coaching them for over seventeen years and today’s situation seems mighty peculiar. Despite Musk’s forecast most businesses I am involved with are experiencing good times.

The biggest problem seems to be recruiting the right people and hiring is a major challenge for almost everyone. For the first time there are more vacancies in the UK than there are unemployed people. We have seen many people leave the workplace never to return and many more have given up full time jobs to take on two or maybe three part time jobs instead. All of this is possible with the emergent and strengthening gig economy and isnt going to get any better.

We know prices are rising across the board but the price of labour is also rising. Almost every new hire in client companies is breaking their existing pay model.

This is not a flash in the pan. It is quite clear that people’s relationship to work is fundamentally changing and if, as business owners and leaders, our attitude to the people we employ doesn’t change we are going to find ourselves without the necessary people to service our clients.

The current disruption to air travel is just one of the manifestations of this. I don’t believe that there is a quick fix to this problem. Individual businesses will try to throw money at the problem but it wont fix the problem. It may (temporarily) move the problem, but not fix it.

It has been clear for some time that people are generally not fulfilled or enriched by the world of work and until we can repair that situation we will, as a society, have a problem.

Mankind’s greatest gift is the gift of choice and if people choose not to work, and more specifically not to work for you. You have a serious problem and need to address the root cause.
