No Man’s Land
One of the challenges of growing a business is that there are times when the received wisdom of the business gurus just is not appropriate. Most business books are written about large businesses and simply what is best practice in an organisation of 4000 or 400 folk may be totally inappropriate when your team is 4 or 14.
As a business grows the chances are that operating as a team or team of teams will be a skill and mindset that must be developed and on that journey there will also be times when team thinking is not yet appropriate. Knowing when to team and when not to team is a crucial leadership skill. You can find yourself in a no man’s land of indecision and choosing the wrong methodology can be particularly ineffective.
Similarly treating a group of people as an assembly of individuals rather than a team, with the appropriate protocols and structure can trap you as the leader and you might feel mired in the detail and that you are having to make every decision as well as dotting every I and crossing every T.
So many growing firms get stuck in this exact place. A good coach with experience of growing businesses can be really beneficial in helping you to navigate this phase.
So the questions for this week are;
- Have you adapted your leadership methodology as the business has grown?
- Or are you still operating the way you did when the business was half its current size?
- Is your structure fit for purpose? Remember structure dictates performance.
Incidentally if you read ‘The Captain Class by Sam Walker that will give you some deep and useful insights into structure and personnel that you might not have expected.
