Never Ending Challenge
I am a huge fan of ‘The One Minute Manager’ by Kenneth Blanchard. One of the key takeaways is the habit of catching someone doing something right which is really important and I am also aware that the number one job for any leader is to elevate the people around her.
I am sure that often, if the habit of catching someone doing something right is being practiced, it may be at the expense of also challenging people to up their game.
With skill and practice, the two are not mutually exclusive. Is it possible to catch someone doing something right and still challenge? Maybe along the lines of, ‘that is a great job John, how do you think we can do it better/ faster/ cheaper/ more consistently in the future?’
So the questions for this week are;
- To what degree are we catching people doing something right?
- How often are we challenging people to elevate their thinking and their performance?
- How often are we managing to do both, and at the same time?
- How can we improve?
