One of the most impactful books I have read recently has been ‘The Founder’s Mentality’ because it expresses quite clearly the differences that make the difference between a successful business and a lacklustre one.

The argument is quite simple that often when the founder is no longer at the helm, very often the attention to detail, the fanaticism, the urgency disappears, and the business consequently becomes ‘less than’.

I have run businesses owned by other people as well as businesses which I have personally owned and I would like to think that I applied the same energy and standards to both but in all honesty I know that isn’t strictly true.

Very often SME’s cannot bring that same professionalism to the game as public companies can but what they usually do bring is a greater sense of ownership, of caring and passion to do a good job.

In a world where standards are often woefully lacking, that founder’s mentality and application is often the edge that is needed.

  • Do your customers experience your business as one that really cares about doing a great job?
  • Does everyone within the business express pride in the part they play in the job your firm does?
  • Do your Net Promoter Scores reflect this in practice?
  • What behaviours do you reward?
  • What behaviours do you punish?
