Meeting Expectations 2

For a meeting to be successful it must have a purpose. If you can’t define the purpose of a meeting, particularly regular, repeated meetings, why are you holding them?

If your purpose begins with ‘to review’, ‘to report on’ or anything beginning with the letters re I suggest you think again. Those meetings are backward looking. You can’t do anything about what you had for breakfast but you can do a whole lot about what you will have for dinner. Please note there is a difference between reviewing and learning from. If you want to learn from last week then state it as the purpose of the meeting.

What is the purpose of the meeting? Are you clear on it? (again, it is not recommended to have multiple purposes or you may end up with what Pat Lencioni called meeting soup).

So the questions for this week are;

  • What is the purpose of the meeting?
  • Is it in writing so that the purpose can be a common purpose?
  • Am I 100% certain the purpose is shared and known by all attendees?
