Meeting Expectations

One way to describe any organisation is a machine designed to achieve certain results where the important parts are human beings, and as with any human activity communication is the oil that connects every part of the machine – or fails to in its absence.

So I can’t imagine a successful organisation operating without meetings. How effective would any sports team, military unit, or firm be if there were zero communication between games or events?

But meetings have a terrible reputation and understandably so. We tend to get them horribly wrong and as a consequence people see them as something to be avoided, so meetings can be counterproductive and divisive, quite the opposite of the desired effect.

It follows then, to be successful, we have to skilfully organise and manage the meetings we have.

So the questions for this week are;

• How enthusiastically are my firm’s meetings welcomed?
• What specifically is each one designed to achieve?
• Would people hold and attend these meetings if they didn’t have to?
