Meaning Purpose and Fulfilment
As individuals we owe it to ourselves to be able to find meaning and purpose in our work. If we fail to do so it is unlikely that we will ever find any real fulfilment in our work. Now the simplistic view is that we spend a lot of our life at work and so we are wasting a lot of life if we are spending it doing something which has no meaning or purpose.
To me it is deeper than that. Human beings are challenge seeking entities. We are hardwired to rise up to challenges, to grow, to learn and to develop.
Abraham Maslow the American psychologist who was best known for creating Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, a theory of psychological health predicated on fulfilling innate human needs stated that “If you plan on being anything less than you are capable of being, you will probably be unhappy all the days of your life”.
So I would argue that by definition if the world of work isnt stretching, challenging and developing us, it must, per se, be contributing to our unhappiness.
Everything we do in work is important to someone and it should be important to us. We owe it to ourselves to find meaning and purpose in what we do. That might be easier in some occupations such as nursing, than others but it surprises me how infrequently people fail to try to find meaning and purpose and that is a mindset issue which condemns us to simply clocking on and clocking off and wasting the time in between.
I would also argue that as leaders a big part of our role is to engage our people by helping them to find that meaning and purpose. That leads to alignment one of the most powerful forces in any human endeavour.
