Matryoshka dolls

A Matryoshka doll is the real name for those Russian stacking dolls. Their relevance to business is that often when we are hiring we tend to recruit someone who is less than, or smaller than either ourselves or the person who previously held the job. In doing so what we are doing, each time, is lowering the average.

If, every time we recruited, we were deliberate in only accepting someone who was more than, or bigger than ourselves or the previous job holder we would of course be raising the average with every new hire.

As a business grows it inevitably becomes more complex and therefore it is questionable whether any of the current team will be able to grow at the required rate. To a large degree the success of any business depends upon our ability to recruit and retain the right talent. That starts with raising our expectations.

So the questions for today are:

• How many of your current team will still be considered A players in a business that is twice as big as it is now?
• For those that don’t have that degree of growth, to what extent are they already holding your growth back right now?
• For those that can grow, are you doing enough to cultivate their growth?
• What are you going to do about it?
