Loose ends
There are few things more exhausting than leaving loose ends.
I spoke today with a business who are getting frustrated that the changes they are trying to make are not going very quickly. I understand and change isn’t always quick and it is virtually never painless and always messiest in the middle but I also noticed from their discussions that very few of the things they were working on had been completed.
I heard them say, ‘we’ve made a start’ or ‘we’ve got some of it done’ or ‘we just need to get together and finalise the details’. All of which are shorthand for ‘its not complete’. Sometimes that is inevitable but when that is happening too much it is literally exhausting because every task has to be picked up again, restarted and moved on and with every new beginning there will be a reduction of energy and enthusiasm.
For many years I have has a plaque on the wall that reads. “A task left undone remains undone in two places – at the actual location of the task, and inside your head. Incomplete tasks in your head consume the energy of your attention as they gnaw at your conscience. They syphon off a little more of your personal power every time you delay. No need to be a perfectionist, that’s debilitating in an imperfect world, but it’s good to be a ‘completionist’. If you start it, finish it…or forget it. Do it – or dump it!”
So the questions for today are:
- How many open tasks are there across your business?
- If you start it, do you finish it?
- Are your change initiatives exhausting you and your team?
- If so what are you going to do about it?
