Words cast spells, so the judicious selection of our language can significantly impact the outcome of our interactions. And it isn’t only our choice of vocabulary but all of the other verbal and non verbal elements of our communication. Tone, timbre, pace body language and even dress will impact the effectiveness of our communication. Albert Mehrabian calculated that only 7% of communication came down to our choice of words.
One of the many challenges of growing a business is having to learn different languages. To be effective we have to learn the language of a boss. We probably will need to learn the language of selling to be effective in that realm. That language will be less effective in the area of peacekeeper or referee which we may sometimes need to enter. As a business scales we will need to become proficient in the language of management and leadership and leading relatively low level employees will require a different language to leading much higher calibre executives.
We need to be proficient in all of these, and more. So another requirement is that of being adaptable and aware.
So the questions for this week are;
· What are you doing to cultivate the necessary flexibility?
· In what contexts do you think your communication is least effective?
· In what contexts do you think your communication is most effective?
· What feedback measures do you use to inform this decision?
