Business is about communication and communication is the response you get. We all think that we are good communicators but if we stop for a moment and reflect we can see that that isn’t true.

How often do we have top repeat ourselves? How often are our requests misinterpreted or ignored completely?

How often have we simply failed to communicate or to have communicated effectively?

One of the fundamentally critical skills to develop is a precision in communication as a business leader. And I am not talking about having a technical qualification in syntax and grammar, but understanding the practical skills of being able to communicate effectively-i.e. getting the response you intended across a varied group of people.

As Adlai Stevenson noted “In classical times when Cicero had finished speaking the people said “how well he spoke”, but when Demosthenes had finished speaking, they said “let us march!””

So the questions for this week are;

• How aware are you of your communication competence?
• Is the response you get always the response you expect?
• Are there any contexts in which you feel your communication is more, or less, effective?
• What will you do to understand this concept better?
