Levers

Every business has one or more levers that you can use to increase its performance. Part of the secret of success is knowing which are the most effective levers in your business at any particular stage of its development and then using those levers effectively.

To explain, one customer who is in the fast food business has identified that his people and their culture are the biggest levers. They can’t do much about the food they serve, that is dictated by the franchise, they can’t do anything about the processes, they are mandated and checked by the franchise too, but who they employ and how those employees feel to be working for the company are all within their gift and powerful levers.

Complex businesses like engineering and construction have typically many levers. Not simply the people and culture levers mentioned above but how they organise themselves, how they buy and how they sell and distribute. The challenge with those businesses is deciding which of the many levers is the number one priority and focussing on that until it is well and truly sorted. Highly regulated businesses like transport and taxis have very few levers.

One of the advantages of having been a coach for so many years is that it becomes easier and instinctive to identify the most powerful levers in any business quickly and clearly. Remember your biggest challenges are your biggest opportunities.

• What are the five most powerful levers in your business?
• Of those which is the one that will give you the most amount of leverage?
• What are you going to do to turn that into a competitive advantage?
