None of us succeeds or fails by ourselves. We succeed or fail as a group and groups need to be led. This strikes me as a truth; a universal truth and businesses, whether micro or massive are the ultimate team game.
It therefore follows that a big determinant of success in business is predicated upon the quality of leadership present in that business.
How does your business rate?
Can you measure that?
How would you know?
I remember I was always focussed on being a business leader and I became managing director of a significant business at the age of 29. Some time later I was paralysed by the question ‘as a leader, what am I supposed to do?’. You might think I was a bit late in having that thought but I have since found that too many people never even reach that stage.
So my provocation to you for today is to begin to work out the answer to that question for yourselves.
If you read last week’s Thursday’s thought you will also recognise that that is the wrong question. The better question is ‘Who do I have to become to be the leader my team needs and deserves me to be right now?’
Whatever answer you come up with, you will be in a better position than those colleagues who have never even considered it. Remember in the land of the blind, the one eyed man is king.
To do:
- Schedule some quiet time to think deeply about the leader your team needs right now.
- Get some perspective. Speak to a coach, a friend, a trusted advisor about it.
- The world is full of information. Which biography of a great leader will you read to help frame up your understanding? Please note there is an important difference between leadership and celebrity. Try Ernest Shackleton before Alan Sugar.
- Get after it.
