It’s not you, it’s me

When an organisation isn’t working well, or a part of it isn’t working well we quite naturally look outward for the problem. Who isn’t performing? Where has the process fallen down? What is happening in the market?

We are probably looking in the wrong direction. The assumption is that the problem is ‘out there’. That is a dangerous and often wrong assumption. As leaders we should be looking inwards first. Did I make a poor decision? What am I doing that is holding us up or holding us back? Which conversation did I not have or not have effectively enough?

I have learned after 21 years of coaching leaders that every business is a reflection of the person at the top. That being said we can conclude that if something isn’t working, if someone isn’t working it is also on us. We should look there with total honesty first.

So the questions for today are:

• For my team to perform am I smoothing the way or actually getting in the way?
• Is most of my time and energy focussed on recognising people doing something right or am I always looking to find fault?
• How easily and frequently do I own up to having screwed up?
• Have we consciously developed a culture of trading in the truth, no matter how uncomfortable that may feel?
