It’s not a number

It is important to know where you are heading. ‘If you don’t know where you are going how are you ever going to know how to get there?’ is a valid question but the answer to that question typically isn’t a number.

20 years ago, when I first became a coach I used to get frustrated that my profession used to talk about earning more, about financial freedom, about money, almost exclusively. Now money is important but, it is rarely powerful enough to provide the motivation necessary to sustain the continuous effort needed to build a successful business. Don’t take my word for it, just google Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs.

In order to achieve something exceptional like building a business or winning a gold medal we need the motivation to do so. The man at the top of the mountain didn’t fall there.

The question isn’t how much do you want to earn, but what do you want to create so badly that you are prepared to do almost anything to achieve it?

So, the questions for today are:

• You only have one short life, what do you want people to be saying as they gather round your coffin when it is all over?
• Do you want that badly enough to consistently do what needs to be done to achieve that?
• What does that mean you need to be doing about it in the next 10 minutes/ 2hours/ 2 weeks/ 2 years?
• Have you written out your commitments to achieve that?
• What is your accountability mechanism?
