It’s all about selection

I am doing a seminar on people and talent shortly and it is the start of the football world cup. I know very little about football but one thing I know for sure is that every country manager will have selected the best squad available to him to play for their country.

It sounds obvious, doesn’t it? Why would they not? Not every selection will meet every fan’s opinion but in the opinion of the person that matters the players going to the world cup will be the best available to the manager. They will have studied the stats and the performance over recent times, and they will make the decision which gives them the very best chance of success.

I wonder why, in business, we don’t take so much care. The success of every business primarily hangs upon the collective abilities of the team members, both individually and collectively. Yet so often I see businesses making obviously flawed decisions.

If we can’t articulate the outputs we need from someone, what chance have we got of selecting the right person for the job? Yet, so often that is what happens. If you can’t tell me why this position gets paid, you aren’t in a position to go looking for someone, so don’t.

So the questions for today are:

• How clear are you on why anyone in your business gets paid?
• How clear are they on why they get paid? Most employees think hey get paid for turning up, they don’t. We all get paid for the value we bring.
• How do you measure that?
• How do they measure that?
• Do the two questions above lead to the same answer?
