Imperative
I was thinking how rapidly the year end is approaching and the importance of having a final push to achieve what we need to achieve,
One of the problems that smaller businesses have is that the imperative to get things done is often less compelling, whereas in a larger company there are always layers of management providing the pressure to perform. If you don’t perform you are going to be under pressure from your boss, who is under pressure from his boss, who is under pressure from a director who is under pressure from the chairman who is under pressure from the city to whom he has to report. Do you get the picture?
In a smaller business it is down to us to create that compelling imperative and pressure is rarely the answer in the short or long term, but if our people arent motivated to perform at a higher level, the fact is they won’t.
As leaders we need to select people with the internal motivation to perform at a high level and create the environment that will both enable and encourage that to happen. If the people that you surround yourself with arent as driven as you, you will be frustrated and not be achieving what you could / should.
So the questions for this week are;
- How aligned are my team members’ ambitions?
- Do I provide enough encouragement and recognition of individual and team high performance?
- How do I show my frustration at low performance?
- Do I do it in a way that leads to people upping their performance?
- What is the level of imperative in my business?
- What can I do about that right now?
