How you made them feel
It is probably the most useful and resonant quote to help someone who is preparing a public speech or presentation, the eloquent and wise words of Maya Angelou, “People will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.”
Countless have benefited from that pearl of wisdom. The same words should also be indelibly tattooed on the inner eyelids of anyone in a leadership role. “People will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.”
How we make someone feel is one of the primary responsibilities of any leader. Unless our words can help someone feel like a valued member of a winning team on an inspiring mission maybe we should keep quiet.
I think it was Napoleon who said that the role of the leader was to define reality and give hope. A leader is uniquely placed to either raise people up or tear them down. To help them become bigger, or less. It’s a choice how we make them feel.
