How Lucky Are We

“Who is the best leader you have ever worked with?” is a question I ask almost all of my clients sooner or later, because it is very difficult to know what good looks like if we have never experienced it.

Because all of my clients are ambitious entrepreneurs I often get an answer that goes something like, “they have all been rubbish Ian, that is why I decided never to work for anyone”. Which is unfortunate but it then means that I have to help them fill that knowledge or experience gap. There are plenty of books stories or films that can help in that regard. I recommend you watch ‘The Last Castle’ with Robert Redford or read ‘Shackleton’s Way’ to start with.

The sad events of the last week have caused me to reflect on Queen Elizabeth the second and her leadership specifically. The more I reflect the more I realise what an exemplary leadership role model she has been. Not just occasionally but constantly and consistently for over seven decades. Not just in matters of state but as a family head, wife, mother grandmother and great grandmother and no one can describe the last 70 years as plain sailing.

Finding good leadership examples is extremely difficult in these heavily scrutinised days.. Too many seem to self destruct sooner or later. How lucky are we to have been set such an example for so many years right here on our doorstep? I can only pray that her successors hold themselves to the same standards of service, courage and compassion.

It is worth reflecting that her promise all those years ago was to ‘serve her people’. Would that more leaders were so clear in their role.
