Fundamentals

Every endeavour is predicated on a few fundamental skills, mastery of which is essential. In football it is ball control, rugby is running and passing, riding a motorbike is clutch control.

Very often once we have a rudimentary grasp of those skills we never revisit them and we not only take them for granted but we also start to lose them over time. If you had to pass your driving test today, do you think you would?

Of course true professionals are always revisiting and honing those skills and never taking them for granted. Jonny Wilkinson would spend hours practicing his kicking skills every day when the formal rugby training had ended.

Business is no different. Sophisticated and complex will always fail if the basics arent in place and constantly and repeatedly perfected.

So the questions for this week are;

• What do you think the fundamental / foundational skills are of a business leader?
• On a scale of 0 to 10 how would you rate yourself against each one?
• On a scale of 0 to 10 how would others, who work with you, rate you?
• What are you going to do to up your score in the eyes of others?
