Excellence
‘In search of Excellence’ sold three million copies in its first four years, and was the most widely held monograph in the United States from 1989 to 2006. It was, I believe the first blockbuster business book of the modern era.
The author Tom Peters published his final book recently and called it ‘Excellence now’, a culmination of everything he had learned in 40 years of researching, writing and consulting on business worldwide.
So what is it about excellence? I think it was best captured by a quote from the organisation Criticaleye which read “The rules for creating a successful business haven’t changed since the crash of 2008, it’s just become a lot harder to get away with running a company badly.”
At the end of the first quarter of the 21st Century running a business badly and surviving is unlikely to happen. But how do you know and how do you learn?
The world of work is, by its nature, isolating. We work in our business and we typically don’t mix with other businesses outside of our industry. This means we lack perspective and we lack diversity of input and thought. We have very few reference points outside of our industry bubble and by the very nature of competition we can only see what we are allowed to see.
If we want to excel in anything we need a better and broader vision.
So the questions for this week are;
- How do you create valuable and helpful input from experts outside the bubble of your business?
- What is best practice in other fields of business that are unknown to you and your team?
- On a scale of 0 to 10 how do you rate your level of excellence?
- What is your master plan to reach a 9 or 10 in your business?
