Different not Better

The excellent book ‘Play Bigger’ makes the point that success is more about being different than being better.

Thinking better leads to small incremental changes which in a mature market is not only hard work but often yields limited success. It is a little bit like working harder. It has finite limitations.

Thinking different however, creates new markets, new niches, new opportunities; think Uber, iPhone, Google. Thinking different has infinite possibilities.

However different for different’s sake is a fool’s errand, but if by being different, thinking different and above all doing different, we can solve previously unsolvable problems, add more value and somehow make the world a better place then that is disruption at its best. Bring it on.
