We all seem to understand how vital it is to have the right people on the bus. We often choose to forget that the corollary of this truism is to get the wrong people off the bus.

When we allow a C player to take up one of the precious seats on our bus, we are often blind to the collateral damage that causes. A players simply don’t accept working with C players and if C players remain you can expect A players to vote with their feet and leave.

But the most insidious consequence is that of contagion. A Harvard Business Review undertook a study of bad employees on business and found that misconduct in the workplace had a social multiplier of 1.59, which means that each case of misconduct in a company , like a virus, spreads and results in an additional 0.59 cases of misconduct when a misbehaving employee is allowed to remain.

We have seen, up close and personal, the impact of contagion in the pandemic. Are you allowing, or even encouraging, an equally damaging contagion to infect your business by failing to exit the people that you should?

  • Who are the people I am allowing on my bus that simply shouldn’t be there?
