Clear Goals

After 20 years of coaching founders and leaders I get to recognise patterns and one of the major patterns is those people who are not making significant progress in building their businesses are suffering from one of three problems.

1. They don’t have clear goals. They may want to build a business, but that in itself is neither clear or compelling enough to give them the desire and point the way forward. Vague goals lead to vague decisions which lead to vague actions.
2. Those goals are not ‘well founded’. This means that there is something about the goals that don’t align with the person holding the goal. An example might be someone whose goal is to want to be rich when they have a disdain or dislike of wealth. In such a case there are unconscious forces working against attaining the goal.
3. We mistake activity for progress. In this case we are very focussed on the goal and committed to the hard work needed to achieve it, maybe even over-committed. As a result we work tirelessly each day and every day and go home exhausted only to realise that over the longer term we are getting no closer to achieving that goal. The problem in this case is called goal displacement. We are working hard on lots of things but not necessarily on the one or two things that are going to be the difference that makes the difference.

The challenge is that from the inside it is almost impossible to truly see what it is about ourselves that is holding us back.

So the questions for today are:

• How clear and compelling are your goals? Are they written down and do you check progress every day?
• What could there be about your stated goals that might not align with your deeper values?
• Are you able to truly discern between activity and progress and who is over-watching your choices?
