Chaos and Order

We all know that repeatable quality depends upon order; on systems and processes and that is a good thing.

It can also be dehumanising and result in treating people like machines, which ultimately is a bad thing. People want and need a degree of choice and autonomy in how and what they do.

We also love that flash of individual or collective genius; Lionel Messi making a goal out of nothing, Ayrton Senna overtaking everyone in front of him on a rain soaked Donington Park on the first lap in 93, the combined genius of the try Gareth Edwards scored for the Barbarians in 73.

At the same time we are infuriated by the failures that result from flawed judgement allowing defeat to be snatched from the jaws of victory, or inconsistent service delivery.

The modern leader has to ride the dichotomy of these two apparent polarities of chaos and order if she wants to create a great company. It is part of the dichotomy of leadership and is a constantly shifting balance point.
