Boiling Frog
Charles Handy pictured a frog in a pan of water on the cover of his book ‘The Age of Unreason’. The parable of the boiling frog posits that if a frog is put into a pan of water which is then slowly heated, the frog will not jump out and will eventually be boiled alive.
There is, obviously, debate about the veracity of the story but the metaphor stands that change compounds and if we don’t react to that change it is likely to cause us harm in the long run.
As I have said before, we live in a world of exponential change and nowhere is change more exponential than in a rapidly scaling business, where the complexity grows at an exponential rate.
To put it another way, if the leaders of that business can’t change and grow at least at the pace of the complexity, and that means exponentially, they will be boiled alive (metaphorically).
So the questions for today are:
- Do you have the desire and the support to grow your leadership ability exponentially?
- Do your team have a similar desire and support?
- How rapid is your leadership growth rate compared to the growth rate of your business?
- What more ought you to be doing?
