‘Ian, you know what you know, but you don’t know what you don’t know; and its always what you don’t know that costs you’. I remember those words of my coach well and I have repeated them many many times since.
No matter how bright we are, none of us can know what we don’t know. We can’t draw up a list of things that would never occur to us.
Generally we find out what we don’t know by bitter and painful experience, which can sometimes be fatal. There is only one safe way to find out what we don’t know and that is through a conversation. That conversation is called a coaching conversation and when done correctly it allows the coachee to see what she couldn’t previously see about some aspect of her behaviour in such a way as to allow the possibility of, and maybe even encourage, a change in behaviour and growth in the coachee.
So the questions for this week are;
• Do you have a formal arrangement with someone to have a deeply personal and intimate conversation specifically designed to help you get better?
• If so does your thinking partner have the requisite experience and knowledge to really help you?
• Are these meetings sufficiently regular to be effective?
• Rate the effectiveness on a scale of 0 to 10?
